What will happen at the Green Party's caucuses?
These are the main things that will happen:
- Unofficial straw poll for governor
- Election of delegates to the state endorsing convention
- Proposal of resolutions
- Proposal of platform changes
What do I need to do to participate?
Show up! To be able to participate in the election of delegates and straw polls, you'll need to be a member of the Green Party of MN, or sign up to join on caucus night. Can I participate in another caucus later?
No, this is illegal, according to Minnesota state law (202A.16). Don't do it.Unoffical straw poll
We will be taking an unoffical straw poll, with the names of all candidates who are seeking our endorsement for governor. Currently, those candidates are:
As always, the straw poll ballot will include the options of "Undecided", "No Candidate", and "None of the Above".
Delegate election
Delegates will be elected for the Green Party state endorsing convention, where we will endorse candidates for statewide offices. Each caucus will receive one delegate for every 3 caucus participants.
Resolutions
Resolutions are statements put out by the party that announce the party's stance on a particular issue. Resolutions often reflect current events.
Platform Changes
The party's platform defines its mission, and how we expect our elected officials to stand on issues. The platform is general in nature and does not pick specific current events.
What is the difference between a resolution and a platform change?
An example to help caucus-goers decide between a resolution and a platform change:
Suppose you are opposed to private prisons, and you were specifically concerned about the private prison in Appleton, Minnesota. In this case, you might write this resolution:
Resolution: Be it resolved that the Green Party of Minnesota supports legislation to purchase the private prison in Appleton, Minnesota, owned by the Corrections Corporation of America.
However, you might also want the Green Party to take a broad stance on the issue, in which case you would propose the platform change:
Platform Change: We oppose the privatization of prisons.
(Note: This resolution was passed in 2006, and this is already in our platform.)
